Flying with a Plan – Human Experience vs. AI

Paragliding is an unparalleled experience – but only when the weather cooperates! To ensure you take off at the right time and place, we rely on the intelligent weather analysis from Paraglidable.com. Their system uses artificial intelligence (AI) to predict when conditions are perfect – and presents the results using a simple color-coding system.

How does it work?

Every day, Paraglidable.com analyzes the latest weather forecasts and compares them with millions of past flights. The system evaluates over 200 weather parameters per day and draws on data from over 2 million recorded flights. Based on historical flight data, it determines how likely a safe and enjoyable flight is. The result is expressed as a percentage and assigned to one of four color categories.

Which factors influence paragliding?

The system analyzes various weather conditions, including:

  • Wind strength and direction: Strong or gusty winds can make takeoff and landing difficult or dangerous.
  • Thermal activity: Good thermals enable longer flights, but excessive updrafts can be challenging.
  • Precipitation: Rain or snow can impair visibility and the handling of the paraglider.
  • Cloud cover: Dense clouds can reduce visibility and make flying unsafe.
  • Air pressure and weather changes: Sudden weather shifts can pose risks for longer flights.

The Colors and Their Meaning

🟦 Blue: Good launch conditions with additional thermals – ideal for long flights. However, thermals can also occur on green days, especially at Pilatus, which often allows for longer flights than other locations. The system may not always capture these subtle differences.

🟩 Green (50-100%): Very good flight conditions. A high probability of a successful takeoff, but not necessarily strong thermals. Depending on the weather, thermals may still develop throughout the day.

🟨 Yellow (30-49%): Conditions require careful evaluation. We decide in the morning based on weather station data. Sometimes, it’s worth heading up the mountain on a hunch and making the final call on-site – these flights often turn out to be the most breathtaking, soaring through clouds or in special weather conditions. Of course, safety always comes first.

🟥 Red (below 30%): No flights from Pilatus possible – but maybe there’s an alternative! Just give us a call.

Human Experience vs. AI

Our AI is a reliable companion for flight planning, but it cannot replace the knowledge and experience of pilots who fly on Pilatus every day. The nuances of local weather phenomena aren’t always fully captured in data.

Especially on yellow days, it’s essential to closely monitor the current weather situation. Our experienced pilots make the final call on whether a flight is safe and worthwhile – because sometimes, the most unforgettable flights happen in these conditions!

There are days when weather forecasts are inconclusive. In such cases, we don’t rely solely on AI but also on our experience and real-time weather observations. On yellow days, we often reassess the weather early in the morning, check weather stations, or observe conditions directly at the launch site. Sometimes, we take the chance and head up the mountain – and are rewarded with breathtaking flights. Gliding through cloud gaps or witnessing rare weather phenomena makes these days truly special.

Despite all our adventurous spirit, safety remains the top priority. If conditions are too uncertain, we cancel the flight – because your well-being comes first.
